This New Horror Film Is Now Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Romantic Bond.

We present a challenge for those in enduring partnerships who are fans of the horror genre: Settle in with your loved one and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie just made its streaming debut on the Hulu service. On the surface, it may seem like standard body horror, but beneath Together exists a intense examination about our choices in loving one another.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have remained a couple for ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a special spark to their portrayals, skillfully embodying both the joys and frustrations of a enduring union.

The story commences when Millie and Tim relocate from the metropolis to the countryside for her career. A familiar story element, admittedly, but that’s mostly where the tropes conclude. Together evolves into as much a psychological exploration of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their rural residence, a violent storm occurs, and Millie and Tim discover an underground cave. After a night spent there and finally finding a way out, a supernatural entity starts to affect the pair. This force compels a otherworldly bond between them that goes exceeding emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a gradually intensifying fright fest, interspersing moments of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). The director skillfully blends these components neatly and presents them in a slowly mounting aura of dread.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they skillfully illustrate manifold depths to the partnership at the film's core. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to focus on anything other than his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim experiences isolation and cut off by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and removed from his support system. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in Millie. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for mobility.

Shanks’ smartest move is that he never makes either of his characters the obvious villain.

The couple face the type of challenges that are inherent in most partnerships after ten years. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But under the surface, there’s an inescapable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these anxieties of excessive reliance and giving oneself over to another person, the allegory never feels overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these visceral horror elements provide a ideal counterpart to the relationship narrative. Both the supernatural and the personal enhance each other in harmony.

A Controversial Conclusion

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the story's concluding statement about unhealthy partnerships. Accounts suggest that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a strong argument for avoiding commitment. On the other hand, some couples who were in conflict found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could potentially serve as a telling indicator of how you perceive partnership. Will the ending inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and utter, “I understand that choice”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an experiment you can experience today.

Together is streaming on Hulu at present.
