The mood at the Stadio Olimpico was far from happy on Saturday afternoon. The home side was losing against Torino, a team that had conceded 10 goals while netting just two in their previous five league matches. Fans from the Curva Nord were finishing their most recent demonstration in an ongoing feud with chairman Claudio Lotito.
A Season Unraveling?
Was the team's progress coming unstitched, or was there ever a binding element maintaining its structure from the beginning? They reappointed Maurizio Sarri to lead the team this summer, before he to later acknowledge that the management had failed to disclose a ban on new signings they were facing for fiscal problems. Reports that he might quit were unfounded, but he did say that Lotito had "deceived" him.
The Biancocelesti became as messy during matches as they were off it, beating Verona 4-0 and Genoa 3-0 but losing their other initial five matches, including the Rome derby. At any given moment, observers have struggled to ascertain if progress is being made or self-destructing.
Cancellieri's Unexpected Return
A single player remained positive through it. Matteo Cancellieri wasn't originally meant to remain with Lazio during this campaign. He completed last season on loan at Parma and, early this summer, Lazio were advocating for him to remain there for another season. The signing restriction led to a change of plans. They were unable to reduce their roster with no new signings.
Cancellieri arrived in the first place when Sarri was last in charge, back then just 20 years old graduate of Verona's academy. He accumulated 20 Serie A appearances in Lazio colors in 2022-23, the vast majority of those from the bench. The ex- sporting director, Igli Tare, who left following that term, later stated Sarri of "informing all Cancellieri had superstar potential but then not selecting him."
Discovering His Best Role
Maybe Sarri was still trying to identify the exact type of Cancellieri's abilities. Billed as a wide forward when he joined, Cancellieri instead found himself much of that season as a struggling deputy to Ciro Immobile at No 9. In 63 appearances during spells with Empoli and Parma during recent campaigns, his tally was seven goals. Shoehorn
