India's capital Rises to Hazardous Smog Following Celebrations

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center encountered inhaling severely hazardous air that registered in the "critical" level.

Extremely High Pollution Measurements

Several parts of the city showed an pollution measurement over 500, which translates to a tenfold increase over the healthy threshold set by the global health authority.

Certain monitoring stations, levels of PM2.5 and PM10 reached peaks of eighteen hundred, equating to 15-20x exceeding healthy limits.

Fireworks Restrictions and New Developments

Since 2020, officials had maintained a total prohibition on the sale and use of fireworks during the Festival of Lights due to their substantial impact to the hazardous smog that covers the city as winter approaches.

However in recent months, the newly elected regional administration petitioned the supreme court to seek a relaxation of the ban.

Officials advocated for allowing "eco-friendly fireworks" – historically criticized by environmentalists as being only roughly 30 percent reduced emissions – as a compromise between "heritage and ecological concerns".

Court Ruling and Reality

Despite concerns of public health and environmental activists, judges agreed to the request, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during designated periods throughout the celebrations.

Throughout the festival evening, there was considerable flouting of the time restrictions across the capital, with little regulation regarding whether the pyrotechnics being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Several air quality sensors throughout the city showed contamination peaking around midnight to the most severe levels observed during Diwali in at least three years.

Regional Consequences

Extensive ignition of fireworks during Diwali also initiated a dispute with bordering Pakistan, with representatives in Pakistan's Punjab partially attributing deteriorating pollution levels in their urban centers on hazardous particles traveling from neighboring India following the celebrations.

Long-Standing Pollution Issue

The dangerously high readings of air contamination in the capital have persisted as a major challenge for over a decade and a half, with the situation showing no improvement.

Near the festival period, the concentration of dangerous particles in the environment has been observed to spike to 70% higher the peak records ever measured in Beijing, which was once regarded as the globally most contaminated metropolis.

Diverse Pollution Sources

The situation in Delhi is resulting from a convergence of multiple factors including transportation pollution, dust, development work, waste incineration and haze from crop residue ignition in adjacent regions of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, creating dangerous pollution that then gets trapped over the metropolitan area as winter air sets in.

Medical and Economic Impact

Public health and economic toll on the nearly 33 million people living in the metropolitan zone is enormous, according to multiple studies.

The contaminated air leads to high levels of nervous system, heart and circulatory and respiratory diseases, and can even lead to malignancies.

Environmental contamination is projected to be causing 10,000 early deaths each year in the city.
